About

I’m not much for talking about myself, but since this is the “About” page, and you’re awesome, I’ll give it a shot!

The name’s Jon, and right now I’m currently living in Southern Japan. One of my reasons for making a retro version of my personal site is to relive those awesome moments venturing the web and reading all kinds of blogs from all over the world.

I’ve messed with computers all my life, and one thing I learned about operating systems are that locking yourself to just one isn’t fun. These are great tools to help you express, learn, and relax, so we shouldn’t devote to just one platform. That being said, I personally have a strong preference for UNIX computers, GNU/Linux, and macOS.

As for how I have this site arranged, I use a static site generator called Jekyll to compile two different versions of my site using a few scripts I wrote to automate the process. The Gaming Log is generated from my Joplin note taking application’s database, and once this site compiles, it automatically pulls from Joplin. To test if the site is working, I’m using Netscape Navigator 4.5 on my PowerBook G3 (PDQ) with Mac OS 9.1 that uses about 192MB of RAM. If it works on Netscape, then it’s gotta work with Classilla.

For my Gaming Log, Game Design is another area I have strong interests in, and it’s there to show my quips and accomplishments on the games that I’ve played. When I’m thinking about a game or concept I want to program, it’s nice to see a list of what I’ve played to gather some ideas.

Besides all the technical stuff and gaming, I enjoy mountain hiking in Japan, and in the future I definitely want to climb Mt. Bandai in Fukushima. Making my own Chicago Deep Dish Pizza is another area of passion, since it’s my favorite food in the universe, watching retro anime and tv shows on my CRT using a Raspberry Pi, and exploring rural areas in Japan!
